Time clock app: pick the right one | TimeUno

A time clock records punches, automatic tracking records the work. See which fits your team, what each can't do, and when a time card is still needed.

What is a time clock app?

A time clock app records when a person starts and stops work. Staff tap clock in and clock out, and the app stores the punches as a time card. It answers one question: how many hours was this person on the clock. It says nothing about what they worked on.

Time clock vs automatic time tracking

A time clock needs a person to press a button. Automatic time tracking records the work on the computer without a button. The first gives you attendance, the second gives you a breakdown by project.

When you need a time clock

You need a time clock when pay depends on punched hours, when staff work shifts away from a computer, or when your country requires working-time records. TimeUno does not cover these cases. It has no mobile app and it is not a legal or certified time clock, so check your local rules before you rely on any tool for statutory records.

When automatic tracking is enough

Automatic tracking is enough when you bill by the project, or when you want to see where the day went. TimeUno runs on macOS and Windows, files each stretch of work under a project, and builds a timesheet you can export as CSV. There is no clock to forget. If you want the details, see time tracking for teams and employees.

What an employee time card should contain

A time card needs the date, the person, the start and end time, breaks and the total. For project work add the project name. A timesheet calculator adds up the totals if you keep the card by hand.

What admins see on a team

On a team plan, admins see worked time, a productivity score and AI usage per person. They do not see apps, sites, window titles or screenshots of anyone else. That makes it a timesheet tool, not employee monitoring.

How to choose

  1. List who has to be on the clock for pay or law. Those people need a time clock.
  2. List who bills by the project or works at a computer all day. Those people suit automatic tracking.
  3. If both groups exist, use a time clock for the first and automatic tracking for the second.

TimeUno has a 14-day trial with a card up front. See pricing for current plans. Comparing other tools first? Read the Toggl Track alternatives.
