Best Hubstaff alternatives in 2026, compared

Hubstaff alternatives for cheaper monitoring or none at all: 7 tools compared, with yearly costs for teams of 5, 15 and 50. Prices as of October 2026.

Hubstaff is employee monitoring with a timer attached: activity levels from mouse and keyboard, screenshots, app and URL tracking, and GPS job sites for field crews. People look for a Hubstaff alternative for one of two reasons. Managers want the same monitoring for less money, without paying for add-ons. Teams want the hours and the projects, without screenshots and activity scores on every employee.

The short answer: for monitoring, Time Doctor goes further than Hubstaff and Clockify Pro is cheapest per seat with GPS included. For free, TimeCamp (automatic tracking) or Jibble (GPS clock-in). Without surveillance, Toggl Track is a plain timer, Timely drafts timesheets from activity only the person sees, and TimeUno tracks automatically while admins see only worked time and scores. Prices are as of October 2026, from each company's own pricing page.

What Hubstaff does well, and what it costs

Members start a timer, and while it runs Hubstaff measures activity levels from mouse and keyboard use, takes screenshots (1, 2 or 3 every 10 minutes, with a blur setting) and records apps and URLs. It records only whether there was activity, not individual keystrokes. Around that sit timesheets, client invoices, project budgets, payroll and, for field teams, GPS job sites that clock people in and out.

The catch is how the price builds up:

  • Starter $4.99 per seat a month billed yearly ($7 monthly): screenshots and app and URL records capped at 500 per seat a month, 5 clients, no idle timeout.
  • Grow $7.50 ($9 monthly): caps rise to 1,500 per seat a month, plus idle timeout, project budgets, expenses and 1 integration.
  • Team $10 ($12 monthly): no screenshot caps, timesheet approvals, scheduling, full payroll, unlimited integrations.
  • Enterprise $25 per seat a month: includes the add-ons below, plus SSO and HIPAA compliance.

Add-ons are charged per seat on top. Locations (GPS and geofences) is not available on Starter or Grow and costs $3.33 a month billed yearly ($4 monthly) on Team. The Silent app, which tracks in the background on company devices without a timer, is $2.50 ($3 monthly) on Starter, Grow and Team. Insights (productivity benchmarks) is $2.50 ($3 monthly) on Starter and Grow; Hubstaff's comparison table lists it as a 3-month trial on Team. So a field team on Team with GPS and background tracking pays $15.83 per seat a month billed yearly, not $10. You pay for every seat, there is a 14-day trial with no card, and a 30-day money-back guarantee after it.

Time Doctor

Time Doctor is the closest match if you want Hubstaff's monitoring and more of it. It tracks time automatically and runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome and mobile.

Better than Hubstaff: screenshots and automatic tracking on every plan. Standard adds web and app usage, attendance, payroll, productivity ratings, time approvals, and leave and break tracking. Premium adds video screen recording, Benchmarks AI and the Unusual Activity AI report, which flags mouse jigglers and keyboard simulators. The trial gives you every Premium feature for 14 days with no card.

Where it falls short: it costs more than Hubstaff at every level, and it watches more. Basic has no app and URL tracking: that starts on Standard. Screen recording is a step past screenshots that many teams will not accept; on Basic and Standard it is a $3 add-on per user a month.

Price: Basic $6.67 per user a month billed yearly ($8 monthly), Standard $11.67 ($14 monthly), Premium $16.70 ($20 monthly). Enterprise on request.

Clockify

Clockify is a timesheet tool first, with a low per-seat price and apps on every platform including Linux. In September 2026 it added Activity monitoring on Pro.

Better than Hubstaff: Pro at $7.99 includes Activity monitoring (websites, apps, keyboard and mouse activity, screenshots), GPS tracking, scheduling and expenses, with no fee on top for monitoring. Hubstaff Team with Locations costs $13.33 for a similar set. Invoicing and approvals start on Standard. The free plan covers up to 5 users for plain time tracking.

Where it falls short: monitoring data is for admins only: Clockify says employees cannot access their own monitoring results, and it needs an Agent app installed on each work computer. The desktop Auto tracker records apps and URLs privately on the computer for 45 days, but turning that into time entries is fully manual.

Price: Basic $3.99 per seat a month billed yearly ($4.99 monthly), Standard $5.49 ($6.99), Pro $7.99 ($9.99), Enterprise $11.99 ($14.99). 7-day trial of Pro.

TimeCamp

TimeCamp tracks time per project and can capture it automatically from the apps and documents you use, matched to projects with keywords.

Better than Hubstaff: the free plan has unlimited users and includes automatic tracking, keywords and GPS location tracking. Invoicing starts on the first paid plan, Starter.

Where it falls short: monitoring is spread across tiers. Apps and websites tracking, window titles and activity levels need Premium. Screenshots, timesheet approvals, billing rates and expenses need Ultimate. Geofencing is Enterprise only.

Price: Starter $3.99 per user a month billed yearly ($5.49 monthly), Premium $6.99 ($9.99 monthly), Ultimate $9.99 ($13.99 monthly). Enterprise on request.

Jibble

Jibble is an attendance app for teams on the move: clock in from a phone, a shared kiosk or a computer, with GPS, geofences, face recognition, selfies, NFC or a PIN.

Better than Hubstaff: for field crews it is free. Jibble's help center says it is free forever for unlimited users, with GPS and facial recognition included, while Hubstaff needs Team plus Locations ($13.33 per seat a month billed yearly). It works offline and exports payroll-ready timesheets.

Where it falls short: it is built around attendance, not project work on a computer. Its desktop app can take screenshots every 2, 5 or 10 minutes (blurred by default), but Jibble lists no activity levels and no app and URL reports. Larger companies are pointed to an Enterprise offer through a demo.

Price: free; Enterprise on request.

Toggl Track

Toggl Track is for teams that want hours per project and client, and no monitoring at all.

Better than Hubstaff: no screenshots, no activity scores. The desktop Timeline records apps and sites, but it is stored on the user's computer and admins cannot see it. Billable rates from Starter; approvals and profitability reports on Premium; apps on every major platform except Linux.

Where it falls short: it is a timer. If people forget to start it, the hours are lost and you get no proof of work. No GPS clock-in. Since September 2026 Toggl's pricing page sells the new combined Toggl app; Toggl Track stays available for existing users.

Price: free for up to 3 users. Starter $9 per user a month billed yearly ($12 monthly), Premium $16 ($24 monthly). 30-day trial.

Timely

Timely's Memory app tracks work in the background on Mac and Windows, and AI drafts timesheet entries from it.

Better than Hubstaff: automatic tracking that stays private. Memory never records keystrokes, screenshots or audio, and Timely says not even your employer can see your memories: managers see the time entries, not the activity behind them. Billable rates on every plan, plus mobile apps with GPS location tracking.

Where it falls short: no free plan and no Linux app. Starter is capped at 5 users and 20 projects, and Premium at 50 users. Project management and accounting integrations start on Premium. No GPS job sites that clock people in, like Hubstaff's.

Price: Starter $9 per user a month billed yearly ($11 monthly), Premium $16 ($20 monthly), Unlimited $22 ($28 monthly). 14-day trial.

TimeUno

TimeUno is our product, so read this section with that in mind. It records the app or site in front of you, the window title, idle time and the project you are in, sorts every stretch into a project and a category, and marks it productive or unproductive. It never records what you type.

Better than Hubstaff: nobody starts a timer, and nobody is watched. Admins see worked time and scores, never anyone's apps, sites or screens. Projects are detected from the folder open in your editor or keywords you set for a client, and a correction is remembered. Timesheets export as CSV. AI tools, including background agents like Claude and Cursor, get their own timeline with tokens and cost, from metadata only. Data is stored in Germany and never sold.

Where it falls short: TimeUno takes screenshots and on-screen text by default. They are private to the person, not shown to admins, and can be turned off per computer. If you want a tool that captures nothing, pick Toggl Track or Timely. There is no GPS, no mobile app, no payroll, no billable rates, no invoicing and no free plan, and it is not a legal time clock. Windows and Linux are in beta. If a manager needs proof of work, TimeUno is the wrong tool on purpose.

Price: Individual $10.49 a month billed yearly ($14.99 monthly), Team $13.99 per seat a month billed yearly ($19.99 monthly). 14-day trial.

Basis: yearly-billed monthly price per seat x 12 x people. Add-ons per seat a month: Locations $3.33, Silent app $2.50. Timely Starter stops at 5 users and Premium at 50. Clockify Free covers 5 people for $0, but without monitoring or GPS. Enterprise plans at Time Doctor, Clockify, TimeCamp and Jibble: on request.

For 50 people with GPS and background tracking, Hubstaff costs $9,498 a year against $4,794 for Clockify Pro. TimeUno costs more than Hubstaff Team: pick it for what it leaves out, not for the price.

How to choose

  • A 12-person remote support team, paid hourly, whose manager hates paying extra for Hubstaff add-ons. Clockify Pro. Activity monitoring, screenshots, GPS, approvals and invoicing come in one $7.99 seat.
  • A 40-person outsourcing company that bills clients on proof of work. Time Doctor Premium. Screen recording and unusual activity detection go further than Hubstaff, and the 14-day trial includes both.
  • A 25-person construction or cleaning crew that only needs clock-in and location. Jibble. Free for unlimited users with GPS, geofences and face recognition, where Hubstaff charges Team plus Locations for the same job.
  • An 8-person agency that bills hourly and whose staff hate being screenshotted. Toggl Track Starter at $9 a seat: billable rates, and nothing an admin can see beyond the hours. Timely drafts the entries for you, but at 8 people it means Premium at $16, because Starter stops at 5.
  • A 15-person software team that wants project time without a timer or surveillance. TimeUno Team. Projects come from the folder open in the editor, AI agent time is counted on its own timeline, and admins see weekly totals only. It has no invoicing, so it fits if you do not bill by the hour.
  • A small team on a zero budget that still wants automatic tracking. TimeCamp Free, with unlimited users. Expect to pay for Premium once you want app and website reports.

Switching from Hubstaff

  1. Export your history first. In Hubstaff, go to Timesheets, then View & edit, set the date range, and download as CSV or PDF.
  2. Check what the new tool imports. Clockify imports time and users from Basic. TimeCamp imports projects, users and groups from CSV on every plan, including Free. Jibble imports workforce data from a spreadsheet. TimeUno has no import: keep the Hubstaff CSV as your archive.
  3. Time it to your renewal. On a Hubstaff annual plan, removed users get no prorated refund. Cancel by archiving the organization or emailing Hubstaff support.
  4. Run both for a week. Put two or three people on the trial, tell them what it records, and compare weekly totals with Hubstaff's.
